Wallpaper has made quite the comeback in the last few years. We all remember how the last couple of years have been about doing wallpaper as an accent wall to add a little pizzazz to your space. Now trends are shifting back to covering multiple walls. Yes, that’s right, multiple walls. It’s all coming back. We’re seeing entire rooms being done in wallpaper and even matching fabric with the wallpaper.
I was quite public about my dislike of multiple walls covered in wallpaper when this trend went out of style many years ago. Although, like anything else in life, it all comes back and hits you in the rear end. This is now the hottest trend forecast for the coming year. I do however believe it’ll take a little more convincing for those who had to remove that awful wall covering that was glued to the wall like white on rice. We all remember trying to pry the paper off the walls while wiping our tear-soaked cheeks as we watched the paper come off in 2 inch strips. Three days later, you were done one room out of an entire paper covered home!
Wow, it felt good to get that off my chest. Like any other trend, when it’s hot, you have to have it. Design much like fashion changes from year to year but yet we follow it. We strive to keep up with the newest and greatest and that is why we will embrace this new wallpaper trend. Although, we will think twice and ask questions prior to covering our entire homes with these products. We’ll ask about the removable qualities of such products and try to find papers that are more subtle in pattern.
Bold patterns on wallpaper is what rejuvenated the trend a few years ago. Bold was in and we had to find ways to integrate it into our designs. Wallpaper was the obvious choice! The trend forecast however shows that we’ll be utilizing wallpaper in a different way in the coming years. Bold patterns are in but no longer the hottest of the trends. The trends have now shifted to textures. Mixing textures within a space is the new thing! It requires minimal effort and is easy to put up in a wall covering format. The best part of all of this is that the chosen textured paper will stay in style longer that its bold counterpart as it’s more subtle.
Now we all know I love to design with paint! Why? Well because it gives me the opportunity to create something completely different that no one else has in their home. During my search for the perfect paper, I’ve found a very chic product, paintable wallpaper. It’s designed to add texture to your wall and it is much easier to match with the rest of your design. So your wallpaper supplier doesn’t have the pattern you want in the colour you desire, not a problem. Buy paintable wall covering in your chosen pattern and paint it! The lovely thing for homeowners working on designing their spaces is that paint companies build “suggested colour schemes” that work well together. This takes away the hassle of having to learn the colour theory of a hobby project.
Still not convinced about wallpaper? Try it on a small accent wall. Although, the styles of today are shifting towards multiple covered walls, accent walls are still well in trend. It’s a great way to ensure you don’t overwhelm the eye. I’ve even seen some accent wallpaper hung with double sided tape or staples. Sounds a little funny? Possibly but some of us like to change things around as the trends change and in order to stay current, we must make things simple and efficient.
