Nautical Wallpaper Is Not Just For The Beach

Nautical Wallpaper has become one of the most popular styles used by decorators today. It is also popular among do-it-yourself enthusiasts, and anyone looking to freshen up their decor. The reason the style has increased in popularity recently is due to a number of factors. For one thing, seascapes, sailing, beaches and marine life are all very popular among children and adults alike. Additionally, the colors, such as light tans, blues and creams, are all favorable among a variety of decors.

While previously a nautical theme implied a very narrow range of styles, today things have changed. Instead of simply applying to a seascape with a tall sailboat drifting into the horizon, now the theme includes a variety of styles, some abstract, some realistic, but all pleasant to look at.

For example, patterns of blue and beige stripes are popular. So are images of blue hydrangeas, beach sandals and lighthouses. All of these images evoke the serenity and peace of the beach life. This sentiment is popular in any decor because it provides a sense of warmth, comfort and peace throughout the room.

By selecting a nautical wallpaper for your home, you allow this sense of well-being to be part of your decor. This benefits you every day in the home, but it also provides a benefit to your house guests at parties, family and friends who come to share in the warmth your home provides.

It is of course the most popular theme when living near the coast. Beach life is a soothing life, and using images from that life in your decor is a powerful way to bring about peace throughout your home. But even when living in the city, or the country or the suburbs, nautical wallpaper can be used with success. In addition to evoking pleasant feelings, it also compliments a variety of existing contemporary and modern themes. The neutral and warm colors are easily brought into a variety of existing colors and themes. Doing so does not require a professional.

A simple look at a color wheel will let you see the appropriate complementary colors. Selecting a single room for the nautical theme is a popular method today, rather than devoting the entire home to the style. It is also popular to use the theme in children’s rooms and nurseries, where the right border or mural can provide fun and excitement for children for years, with little cost and no maintenance, making it a much more convenient solution than paint.

Wallpaper Designs Advice

When you seek you beautify your home through the use of appealing wallpaper designs, let not your sense of naivete dictate the choices you make. There are many designs out there, far more than any one person is likely to be able to view and process, and you might lose sense of what would look good in reality when confronted with such a smorgasbord. Modern wallpaper designs may be contemporary, but remember that ‘modern’ changes as the years go by and become ‘antiquated’. You want to get something that will outlive the current design trends of the day, unless you can afford the waste that changing wallpapers entails. Even if you can afford it, the environment cannot, so choose wisely and for longevity.

Be very careful of crazy wallpaper designs and funky wallpaper designs that may seem like a good fit for your home upon first impressions- you are likely to regret your choice once the novelty value wears off. The same goes for overly gaudy designs that may remind you of a more carefree period in history or your own life. Unless you truly like such designs, it’s better to go for something more conservative and tasteful. That’s not to say that some of the vintage wallpaper designs out there wouldn’t work- gaudiness can be a virtue if done right. Unfortunately, it rarely is and it can be a challenge to find something that would work in your home.

Simple, solid colors can work great and create a more dramatic effect than many wallpapers. Red wallpaper designs are often used to create an energy in a room, but be careful not to overdo it as no one wants to feel “fiery” all the time, especially in a room meant for relaxing. Black and white wallpaper designs can be great for creating a sober, serious, or even stark environment. If that’s the thrust of your personality, so be it. A more balanced use of black and white may be more subtle designs that lend elegance more than seriousness to a room.

Turn Your Walls Into A Talking Point With Wallpaper

Wallpaper has made a triumphant resurgence over the past few years and now we’re simply overwhelmed with choice when it comes to wall coverings. With it’s unique beauty, durability and versatility, wallpaper has the power to create far greater a visual impact than seemingly plain painted walls. Whatever your style may be, there is a wallpaper to complement and enhance your interior design scheme!

The Purpose of Wallpaper

No longer confined to old, tired homes, wallpaper is now commonplace within contemporary homes and regarded as a piece of art in it’s own right. Injecting texture, colour and pattern, wallpaper can either enrich your chosen design scheme, or be framed as the focal point of a room. Once solely used as a feature wall or complete wall covering (for the more daring), the versatility of wallpaper has become increasingly apparent as new and innovative applications are uncovered. From creating the illusion of greater height or breadth through the design and placement of pattern, to transforming the often neglected ceiling with an intriguing layer of colour and texture, the possibilities are simply endless.

Buying & Applying Wallpaper

Before you start pasting wallpaper to your wall however, consider the purpose of the room and the frequency in which you use it. Is the room utilised for work or relaxation? Is it occupied in the morning, evening or throughout the day? With this in mind, you must then decide on a suitable material. The chosen material will ultimately have a direct bearing on the application and durability of the wallpaper in the long-term. For example, vinyl-coated papers are durable and washable so are most suited to rooms with high moisture levels such as bathrooms, whilst textured vinyls are hardwearing making them ideal for areas with high foot traffic or walls with unwanted imperfections.

Another key consideration is the removability of the wallpaper. Most pre-pasted and self-adhesive wallpaper can either be stripped or peeled back with or without the help of some soap and water, but it is best to check this prior to making a purchase.

Once these decisions have been made, it is then time to make the all important design decision to ensure that your wallpaper aligns with your style and personality. Delicate florals can be used to inject a burst of freshness in a light-flooded living room, whilst bold and daring prints in rich hues offset by gold accents can add depth and regal elegance to a master bedroom. Wallpaper in a striped design or large-scale patterned motif can be utilised to manipulate the sense of space in a smaller room, without being too overwhelming. For a more modern twist, why not try photo wallpaper? Digital prints and photo wallpaper offer a unique and stylish solution for homeowners to infuse personality into a room.

Adding style and sophistication to your chosen space does not need to break the bank or involve a complete overhaul. If you’re afraid of overpowering a room, it is recommended that you simply start by covering just one wall. You never know, it may just be the necessary amount of wallpaper to reinvigorate your chosen space. However, do not simply confine yourself to the typical living room or bedroom. The hallway is too often overlooked, yet offers you greater liberty with your choices due to the limited space and minimal furnishings.

Additional Uses For Wallpaper

If, however, you can’t bring yourself to commit to wallpaper just yet, why not try using it for different purposes such as draw liners, framed art, wall hangings or to lift tired lamp shades, inside or out? No matter how you choose to incorporate wallpaper into your home, it is important to strive to achieve continuity. In order to do so, select a motif from the wallpaper and attempt to repeat it elsewhere within the room and decorate furnishings with scatter cushions or bed linen in similar or matching accent colours.

How To Use Stripes Effectively In Your Home Decor

The use of stripes in home decor is usually considered appropriate for people with a more adventurous approach to decorating. Whether this is strictly true or not, we don’t know. We do know that there are only a few women with figures fabulous enough to wear stripes, so maybe we should proceed with the same caution when dressing our homes too.

With a little thought, stripes don’t have to be over-powering, and they can look quite sophisticated in small doses. If you take time to visit bars in top-end hotels, you will see stripes discreetly winking at you from their comfy sofas. Using stripes this way, to blend in with, and enhance your existing decor rather than dominating it, is a more sophisticated approach that will suit most rooms.

When you do find the right room to include stripes in, you will tune in to a range of striped patterns on sofas, curtains, scatter cushions, throws, crockery and artwork. Any one of these items can be used to create a unique interior, without you committing to a whole room of striped walls. For example, painting a couple of prominent parallel lines on your wall, or around your door-way will have a more artistic effect than an entire room slapped full of striped wallpaper. You could even try wallpapering (or painting) one accent wall with stripes to create a focal point. Painting stripes will require patience and a steady hand!

Consider the colour and design of other pieces in your room as these should dictate how, and indeed if, you use stripes. Stripes will be visually striking if the furniture and other accessories in the room are plain or made of single blocks of colour. This is especially true if you wish to include thick, bold multi-coloured stripes. A single striped scatter cushion in a prominent place will have more impact than a set of striped cushions. Your striped accessories may also be grouped with floral patterns and prints. The key is to stick to a limited colour palette so that each item is working in harmony. Your social life will be in ruins if you trigger epileptic episodes in your house-guests.

The size of your stripes is also something to consider. If you are planning to display artwork that features bold stripes in contrasting colours, then combine this with neutral walls. This will draw the eye towards your artwork and make it a focal point.

Vertical stripes are popular for curtains and can create a different mood to your room once they are drawn. We have seen home renovation shows design whole rooms of hand-painted horizontal stripes to ill-effect. It might be fun to live in a jack-in-the-box for the day, but could you really rest with all those stripes closing in on you?

The thought that stripes are only to be used by the more adventurous among us is not true. If you take a moment to consider: the size of your room, the size of the striped object you wish to include and the colour palette of your entire room, you will be on your way to creating a harmonious design scheme. A little planning and restraint can go a long way.

Home Decor Tips – Only One Wall Effective

Original ornaments on the walls are still in fashion. Fantasy and effect have a warm welcome in every modern house. But it can’t be too much of it, cause it might make the interior too heavy. That’s why the designers recommend to single out…only one wall.

There are so many designs, colors and techniques of how to decorate the wall that we might get dizzy from all of that. And what is worse there are no rules that we should have a wallpaper in more traditional interior and a photo wallpaper and wood on the wall in the modern house. Well, it’s not that bad at all cause we have a wider field to use our imagination, play with colors, designs.

We can mix and match old furniture with new accessories and ornaments. Also with those on the walls. From a different side we can put new furniture and have the walls made in the traditional way with traditional wallpaper. The newest and the most effective, cheap way of decorating the walls is to paint only one of them. And according to trends it has to be intensive color – purple, red, bronze. And what are the other ways to decor the wall (and not also wall)?

We might use decorative plaster. It has an unusual structure – irregular and rugged which makes a nice look of the wall. But there is one condition: it can’t be covered up by furniture. Otherwise it loses decorative flow. Very effective is also Italian technique called “stucco lustro” which means in English “sparkling plaster”. It’s quite expensive plaster that is imitating…. and reflex the light. But we can make “stucco lustro” ourselves – easier and cheaper just by painting the wallpaper with a sparkling paint. Perfectly in yellow or orange color.

To make an unusual wall we can just use a colorful wallpaper which will bright up the room. They wallpapers made of paper and made of material – first cheaper, second more expensive. Most popular now are the one with big flower ornaments, that has dark, intensive colors. But because of those colors and design they look good only in big, bright interiors. In a small room they will make a worse effect making the interior visibly smaller than it is.

Items that really look good on the wall are stone, wood and bricks. Matching them with such decorations like tablecloth weights made of stone or scented candles gives the room an unusual look and climate that is reserved only to warm cottage houses. They will have an ideal prelude in a stair basket on the stairs that will lead us to amazing room with stones placed one near another giving a unique design. Or into the room with old bricks! Very classic on one side and modern on the other side.

A Guide To Purchasing Wallpaper For Your Home

Wallpaper has made a comeback in recent years. Today, they are used as a decorative trick to make your room look larger and bigger. But, if one makes a wrong decision, it can leave your room looking exactly the opposite that you would have wanted.

One of the first things you need to think about is the size of your room. It will help you get an idea about the design that will look best in it. While you can easily get away with a bold print, you need to limit the print to a feature wall and use only a neutral shade on the other walls.

The type of wallpaper you pick also helps in creating a major impact in how your room will look. People who have irregular walls need to avoid stripes and geometric prints that they emphasize on the flaws and make the room look bad. In many homes, where the walls are in bad condition to pain, printed wallpaper is much cheaper to use. Another interesting way to cover old walls is by using feature walls. Feature walls need not be created by simply using wallpaper. It should be added naturally and the eyes should lead naturally to it. Wallpaper is the feature wall is a good idea if you are on a budget and want to use an expensive print.

Customizing Walls by Decorating With Wallpaper

Picking the kind of wallpaper to use not only depends on the liking of the homeowner, but also the location where the wallpaper will be installed, the amount of human traffic, those who will frequent the area and the activities that will transpire in the room. These factors must be taken into account when redecorating walls with designer wallpaper and wallpaper borders.

Low-traffic and low-activity areas like master bedrooms, dens, and babies’ rooms may be pasted with standard wallpapers since these areas are not prone to damage or stains. However, high-traffic and high-volume areas such as the kitchen, bathroom, and children’s rooms must be fitted with vinyl wallpapers and wallpaper borders, because they are easy to clean and are more durable than standard designer wallpaper.

As mentioned before, the design of the wallpaper also depends on those who frequent the area. The bedroom for instance, serves as a haven for every member of the household and for those whose room is to be wallpapered, they will most likely want to decorate their bedrooms to express their style and personality.

Teenagers are very creative – when it comes to decorating their walls, they tend to be very passionate in expressing themselves in nearly every aspect of their room be it the murals, wallpaper borders, or other wall decors. Teens typically like loud, animated wallpaper designs and murals. However, there are no exact trends in decorating a teenager’s bedroom since most of them will end up highly individualized in terms of colors and themes.

The nursery room is a peaceful place. As such, the colors and patterns of their walls should be very comforting but still exhibit vibrant, light colors. Colorful designer wallpaper, murals, and wallpaper borders that are based on nursery rhymes are a great decorative choice for nursery rooms. Do stay away from colors or pictures that are too loud for the little ones. Strike a good balance between colors and design for stimulation and comfort when choosing nursery room wallpaper.

For kitchens, the best way to enliven the walls is to use kitchen wall decor and wallpaper that match and complement each other. You can choose from a wide array of themes: country, American, contemporary, toile, and a lot more. Typical kitchen wall decor have farm or barn animals, cooking or silverware, topiaries, fruits and vegetables, flowers, clocks or jars. There are also those with French-worded recipes, Victorian motifs, lattice and other vintage-inspired designs. Faux finish designer wallpaper also goes well with kitchen counter tops. They should match the color scheme of the rest of the kitchen to create a classy kitchen look.

To give your bathroom the illusion of having a larger space, go for bathroom wallpaper that gives an airy impression. Colors like white, yellow, or any neutral colors can do the trick. A bathroom wallpaper mural placed on the largest wall also helps in making a small bathroom seem bigger. For standard bathrooms, the taffeta-themed papers are also a good choice since currently, they make up the latest wallpaper trend.

Modern wallpapers today cater to the needs and likes of every individual. If you are the kind to deviate from the norms, you can opt to hang wallpaper with fun-themed schemes in your den. Comic strip wallpaper and wallpaper borders in your kitchen can also give the place the reflection of being deviant. Wallies, a brand of wall embellishment that’s increasingly popular is also the perfect way to liven up any room. It is easy to apply and reposition, and can further personalize a room.

Wallpaper for the Modern Home

Wallpaper has made quite the comeback in the last few years. We all remember how the last couple of years have been about doing wallpaper as an accent wall to add a little pizzazz to your space. Now trends are shifting back to covering multiple walls. Yes, that’s right, multiple walls. It’s all coming back. We’re seeing entire rooms being done in wallpaper and even matching fabric with the wallpaper.

I was quite public about my dislike of multiple walls covered in wallpaper when this trend went out of style many years ago. Although, like anything else in life, it all comes back and hits you in the rear end. This is now the hottest trend forecast for the coming year. I do however believe it’ll take a little more convincing for those who had to remove that awful wall covering that was glued to the wall like white on rice. We all remember trying to pry the paper off the walls while wiping our tear-soaked cheeks as we watched the paper come off in 2 inch strips. Three days later, you were done one room out of an entire paper covered home!

Wow, it felt good to get that off my chest. Like any other trend, when it’s hot, you have to have it. Design much like fashion changes from year to year but yet we follow it. We strive to keep up with the newest and greatest and that is why we will embrace this new wallpaper trend. Although, we will think twice and ask questions prior to covering our entire homes with these products. We’ll ask about the removable qualities of such products and try to find papers that are more subtle in pattern.

Bold patterns on wallpaper is what rejuvenated the trend a few years ago. Bold was in and we had to find ways to integrate it into our designs. Wallpaper was the obvious choice! The trend forecast however shows that we’ll be utilizing wallpaper in a different way in the coming years. Bold patterns are in but no longer the hottest of the trends. The trends have now shifted to textures. Mixing textures within a space is the new thing! It requires minimal effort and is easy to put up in a wall covering format. The best part of all of this is that the chosen textured paper will stay in style longer that its bold counterpart as it’s more subtle.

Now we all know I love to design with paint! Why? Well because it gives me the opportunity to create something completely different that no one else has in their home. During my search for the perfect paper, I’ve found a very chic product, paintable wallpaper. It’s designed to add texture to your wall and it is much easier to match with the rest of your design. So your wallpaper supplier doesn’t have the pattern you want in the colour you desire, not a problem. Buy paintable wall covering in your chosen pattern and paint it! The lovely thing for homeowners working on designing their spaces is that paint companies build “suggested colour schemes” that work well together. This takes away the hassle of having to learn the colour theory of a hobby project.

Still not convinced about wallpaper? Try it on a small accent wall. Although, the styles of today are shifting towards multiple covered walls, accent walls are still well in trend. It’s a great way to ensure you don’t overwhelm the eye. I’ve even seen some accent wallpaper hung with double sided tape or staples. Sounds a little funny? Possibly but some of us like to change things around as the trends change and in order to stay current, we must make things simple and efficient.
